AVCHD 2.0 to Avid MC-Transcode Convert Sony A77 1080p AVCHD to DNxHD for editing in Avid Media Composer

The Sony A77 is Sony’s latest prosumer stills camera with enhanced video features and the Alpha (formerly Konica-Minolta) lens mount. It has a 24 megapixel APS-C size sensor and can shoot HD video at 1080P in AVCHD 2.0. It also has a MPEG movie mode. Frame rates go up to 50fps, but I only tested 25fps in the time I had. (The US NTSC model does 24 and 60 frames per second instead).

While the problem I immediately found was that 1080 50p AVCHD files are not friendly for Avid Media Composer(including Avid Media Composer 6.5), because when loading Sony A77 AVCHD to Avid, it always need a long for rendering. In fact, Avid’s most friendly video format is DNxHD (*.mov). So, we need to transcode Sony A77 AVCHD footages to DNxHD first.

DNxHD is a lossy high-definition video post-production codec intended to be usable as both an intermediate format suitable for use while editing, which was developed by Avid Technology, Inc. Brorsoft AVCHD to Avid MC Converter, which does a good job in converting Sony Alpha A77 AVCHD to Avide Media Composer preferred DNxHD format. It has Windows and Mac versions, please free download it to have a try, I believe it will be your best choice.
