If you're looking for a low-cost HD camcorder, I think Canon Vixia HF R21 perhaps is the best choice for you. The quality of the video captured by the Canon HF R21 is very good for a sub-$500 camcorder. It isn't on the same level as $1,000 camcorders, but the HD images are crisp and the low light performance is solid for an entry-level model.

While , as a iMovie mac editing software user, we always met troubles in transferring Canon HF R21 AVCHD to iMovie editing. All this happened is due to the different codecs between iMovie and Canon HF R21. The codec of recordings from Canon Vixia HF R21 is MPEG-4-AVC/H.264, the AVCHD is highly compressed and not the iMovie friendly video format, but Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC) is the most compatible codec for iMovie.
